Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential, awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), is an internationally recognized certification that signifies advanced expertise and professional excellence in the field of occupational safety and health. CSPs are highly skilled professionals who demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of safety management systems, risk assessment, regulatory compliance, and organizational safety leadership.

This certification is designed for individuals who have progressed beyond technical-level safety roles and are responsible for leading safety initiatives, advising management, and ensuring safe practices across complex operational environments. CSPs play a pivotal role in identifying potential hazards, implementing control measures, developing safety policies, and fostering a proactive safety culture.

Achieving the CSP credential not only validates a professional’s ability to manage workplace safety at a strategic and operational level but also enhances credibility with employers, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders. It is widely respected across industries such as construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare, and energy, making it a gateway to leadership opportunities and international career mobility. CSP certification holders are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethics, continuous professional development, and practical application of safety principles to protect people, property, and the environment.

Assessment Details

The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) examination is a computer-based test (CBT) designed to evaluate a candidate’s advanced knowledge, skills, and competency in safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) management. The exam assesses the ability to apply comprehensive safety principles, analyze complex data, evaluate workplace hazards, and implement effective safety management strategies in real-world scenarios.

The CSP examination consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible options, of which only one is correct. Questions include conceptual, analytical, and scenario-based problems that test both theoretical understanding and practical application at a professional and managerial level.

Candidates are allotted a total of 5.5 hours to complete the exam, which includes time for reviewing and submitting answers. The test is administered in a secure, computer-based format at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide.

The questions are designed to test various levels of cognition — from knowledge recall and comprehension to application, analysis, and evaluation. Some questions require performing numerical calculations, interpreting technical data, or analyzing charts, tables, and safety reports. A reference formula sheet and other technical data are provided on-screen during the exam.

The exam is scored on a scaled system, where the minimum passing score is determined by BCSP’s standardized scale. Candidates receive their results immediately upon completion of the exam.
